Hardware and self-service

Kiosks, ATMs and TVs that every customer can use.

Self-service hardware is where an inaccessible screen becomes a locked door: there is no one at the counter to help. We assess the device and the software on it against the standards written for hardware, and give your vendor a change list they can act on.

What we assess

The device, and the software on it.

ATMs and cash machines

Speech output through the headphone socket, tactile keypads, screen time-outs, privacy of spoken balances, and every step from card entry to receipt.

Kiosks

Ticketing, check-in, KYC, queue-token and government service kiosks: reach, text size, audio mode, and whether a task can be finished without help.

Smart TVs and set-top boxes

TV apps and menus driven by a remote: visible focus, voice guidance, captions and audio description that can be switched on without sight.

Payment terminals

PIN entry, tactile marks, audio cues and on-screen prompts on card terminals and point-of-sale devices.

Kiosk-mode web and Android apps

Where the device runs a web or Android app, our platform captures it screen by screen, the same way it captures websites and phone apps.

Procurement and vendor checks

An assessment before you buy or roll out a device, so accessibility is in the contract, not a retrofit.

How we assess

On the device, against the hardware standards.

  1. Scope

We list the device models, software versions and the tasks customers come to do, and agree which sites or branches to visit.

  2. Capture the software

Where the device runs a web or Android app, the platform captures every screen and checks it against WCAG 2.2.

  3. Test on the device

Specialists complete each task with headphones, the keypad, the remote and a seated reach, and record what happens at every step.

  4. Decide every clause

A position on each applicable clause of EN 301 549 and IS 17802, with the evidence behind it.

  5. Vendor change list

What to change in the software, the firmware or the enclosure, ordered by the barrier it removes.

  6. Re-test

Every fix checked again after the vendor's next software or firmware release.
